Do you know the difference between a questionnaire and a survey? Many English learners think they’re the same—but there’s a small (yet important) difference. Let’s learn together!
1️⃣ What is a Questionnaire?
A questionnaire is a set of written questions that collects information from a person.
• It can be on paper or online.
• Usually, you answer it by yourself.
• It can have multiple-choice questions or open questions (where you write your answer).
Example:
Your teacher gives you a form asking about your study habits. That’s a questionnaire.
💬 Interactive Task: Write one question you might see in a questionnaire about “English learning.” Example: How many hours a week do you study English?
2️⃣ What is a Survey?
A survey is the whole process of collecting and studying information from people.
• A survey often uses a questionnaire.
• Surveys can be done by phone, online, or face-to-face.
• The goal is to understand opinions, habits, or facts.
Example:
A company calls 1,000 people to ask what smartphone brand they use—that’s a survey.
💬 Interactive Task: Think of a survey topic. What 3 questions could you ask? Example: What’s your favorite fruit? How often do you eat it? Why do you like it?
💡 Remember:
• Questionnaire = the questions (tool)
• Survey = the project (process)
