I understand! I got it! – What’s the difference? この違いわかりますか?2025.01.31

“I understand” and “I got it” are very common to all English learners. While they may seem similar, they carry different meanings. They also have different use.

“I Understand”

When someone says, “I understand,” they are conveying a deeper level of comprehension. This phrase means that the person hears the information and grasps its meaning.

When to Use “I Understand”:

Clarification of complex ideas – If someone explains a concept or process, responding with “I understand” suggests that you have got all the details.

Emotional acknowledgment – In conversations where empathy is needed, such as when someone shares a personal struggle, saying “I understand” can indicate that you recognize their feelings.

Formal or professional settings – This phrase is commonly used in business, academic, or serious discussions to confirm comprehension.

Example: Person A: “To solve this equation, you must isolate the variable first.” Person B: “I understand. That makes sense now.”

“I Got It”

On the other hand, “I got it” is a more casual and immediate way of acknowledging information. It usually indicates that the listener has received the message but does not necessarily imply a deep level of understanding.

When to Use “I Got It”:

Quick acknowledgments – If someone gives you simple instructions, “I got it” is a way to confirm that you’ve received them.

Task completion or readiness – It can be used to indicate that you’re prepared to handle a task or have understood what needs to be done.

Informal conversations – This phrase is more commonly used in casual speech rather than formal settings.

Example: Person A: “Can you buy me some food?” Person B: “I got it!”

Choosing the right phrase can enhance your communication and ensure clarity in conversations. To know more vocabulary words, you should learn English with an E.S.L. teacher.
